[solved] Alienware M17x - SLI GTX280m + 9400, only one GPU

Post by stamatisx » Wed Oct 21, 2009 2:12 am

Hi there, I have an Alienware M17x with dual GTX 280m in SLI and an onboard 9400. CPU is T9600 @ 3.2 GHz overclocked. The OS is Windows 7 64bit. The problem is that when I run the program it utilizes only one GPU. I have tried all the possible combinations in bios to disable the onboard GPU and leave the two 280m, i deactivated the hybrid mode both in windows and in bios, the first time just deactivating the 9400 and the second time having all 3 GPUs active. When I deactivated the 9400 I also deactivated the SLI mode and the PhysX from the NVidia Control Panel. Still after all these combinations, BarsWF uses one GPU which gives me 445 MHash/sec and combined with the CPU I get an average of 560 MHash/sec. Is there any way to utilize the second GPU ?

That is really strange. Could you try have SLI off, 9400 on?

The 9400 does not support CUDA (???), if I run the program with only the 9400 on, the program freezes and returns this error: 00CUDA kernel error: unknown error.00
I edited this post to add that I use 4GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz RAM and i guess this affects this GPU

After some research it seems that CUDA enables the second GPU only if a second monitor is connected. The problem here is that it is a laptop and the GPUs are internal. I pluged in a second monitor using the VGA port (there is also an HDMI but I don't have a TV/monitor to test it) tried all the possible combinations but still nothing, so am I contemned to use only one GPU? That sucks considering I could achieve 1GHash/sec in a laptop

Ah, right :-)
No need to actually connect monitor, you may extend desktop to that adaptor without actually connecting monitor :-)

How can I do that? How can I specifically use the second GPU to extend my desktop? So far I haven't seen any option for that. If anybody knows how to do that please post it. The only thing I was thinking of, was to make a software loop and trick the OS to think that I have attached a second monitor on the slave GPU. Is this possible?

Well, you are under Vista, right?
I was able to extend desktop to videocard without attaching monitor in Windows 7 .

If that's tricky in Vista, probably you may connect monitor temporary, extend desktop there, and then disconnect monitor.

Also, I know there are VGA dummy connectors available (and it is possible to have computer think you have a monitor connecting by short-circuiting some pins on the vga interface... Do not try this at home ).

The dummy connector has to be connected to VGA or HDMI port on the second GPU in order to be activated by CUDA , since it is a laptop I don't have any physical ports availiable on the second GPU. The only video outputs I have are on the side of the laptop and I suspect they all are connected to the primary VGA. If someone else believes the opposite or knows something more, please post it.
Well, you are under Vista, right?
I am always under Windows 7 64bit
I was able to extend desktop to videocard without attaching monitor in Windows 7
I extented the monitor in both the laptop LCD and the external monitor, nothing changed. I don't have any option to extend the monitor to the second GPU. If you know how to do it please post it. If you unplug the external monitor, it automatically detects the change and goes back instantly to single monitor. Unless someone provide solution through software there is no way to force a second monitor to the slave GPU

From what I see, if CUDA remains as it is and requires a monitor attached to the slave GPU then there is nothing to be done for the moment and I will probably close the thread

I've just looked how I did it, and I don't know  I have monitor connected to my AMD card, and nVidia card is without monitor WITH desktop extended to it.

Anyway, you might consider booting WindowsXP (I use esata flash drive for that) - you don't need monitors attached in WinXP.

It's an alternative which I thought and read before but unfortunately I don't have a 64bit version of windows XP. I can't download it using torrents either cause I am under surveillance from my ISP and since there is no Linux version of BarsWF available I have no other option.

Win 7 uses the new WDDM like vista does. It only supports video cards that monitors are plugged into. I would recommend that you down load the latest drivers from Nvidia if you haven't already. You may be able to enable physx on the 9400 to get it to be recongnized. There is an option in the nvidia control panel to specify physics device. Also there are some registry entries you might try (do a google search for "LimitVideoPresent Sources" or "DisplayLessPolicy" registry entires + CUDA) . Or if you really want to get it to work just do a dual boot to winxp but what I would actually recommend is to not even bother with the 9400 because it is not even worth the effort it only has 16 stream processors. You might get another 16M hashes a sec with that card at most. if you really wanted that extra 16M you could just over clock your GTX280 a small amount and likely make up for it. Sorry if that sounds mean but I have two of those cards and they are awful.

This is apparently wrong, because I am using my 8400GS without monitor attached in Win7 right now :-)

Doh! Maybe that was only with Vista 64.

And I may have been wrong about the 9400 only getting 16M hashes/sec apparently I get about 35M at home. But the same card only gets 16M on another machine so it may depend on your set up. Also this is the 9400 GT and I'm guessing you have a 9400m so it is a little different.

It's true I won't gain anything from the 9400m, on my first post I mention that I have dual GTX280m in SLI mode and right now I use only one of them. My problem is how to make the second 280m run, if could make the 9400 run as well it would be wonderful but right now I try to brak.e the limit of 1Ghash/sec using a laptop and I am sure I can do it

Could you get a copy of gpu-z - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/ and tell me what it says with all the cards enabled?

As you can see I can enable or disable Physx. For the SLI I have to disable Hybrid from the BIOS. Then I can choose if I want SLI or not.

Hmm, well they all show up in the device manager so that's a good start. Have you installed the latest cuda drivers - http://www.nvidia.com/object/thankyou.h ... eneral.exe

Also have you tried disabling physx - then re-enable it? That has been known to fix some problems.

Alienware M17x - SLI GTX280m + 9400, only one GPU running
by stamatisx » 20 Oct 2009, 22:12

This is my first post, as you can see I have tried all possible combinations. I have the latest drivers for CUDA, Physx, GPUs

Actually it's better to ask nVidia directly or atleast use their CUDA forum because it's not just password cracking related problem, it's CUDA layer itself cannot recognize 2nd GPU. I think there won't be any problems with Windows XP (because of different driver model) but if installing XP isn't an option then... I'm afraid no solution possible.

And, btw, I have no idea how Michael was able to activate his 9400 without monitor attached with Win7. I've wasted some time with it trying to enable my 2nd GPU without monitor attached -- no success. Currently I'm using my old 15" monitor as "dummy plug" but it's kinda space consuming solution. Attaching some KVM probably be better. Or shortcutting pin 9 to 15 which I'm kinda scaring to check out :).
