N260-GTX-OC vs r4850-OC

Post by Eleanor » Thu Feb 26, 2009 3:59 pm

Hello,

i buy the N260 because that must be better than the r4850.

but i try it and the r4850 has 980Mhsec and the n260 has 730Mhsec

what can i change to improve performance?

thanks

Extremely funny thought  >>>i buy the N260 because that must be better than the r4850.
Firstly, what ...n260?   what sp count? old one -192 or newer - 216?With linear code thread using, it's important 216/192*100%.
the second frequency of SP domen (for nvidia) and core freq. -for ati; Conclusion:overclocking could help- ;)
So,...liquid nitrogen or helium  ----- (-196 *C) and (-269*C) respectively, voltmoding, etc...Have fun!
Seriously, software: try to increase working time; watch key settings, but that means freezing 0f desktop :x , and play with max threads to run ,it could help :ugeek:
now you see what r4850 better moreover 4850x2
experiment kills the theory

Most likely 4850 would be faster anyway (it is also easy to overclock to 4870 stock clock 750Mhz with ~1150MHash/sec).

What is then the best card to buy?

i want fast cracking

i try the 2x r4850-oc but have trouble to have them both on 1 crack?

wat can i buy?

to come back on my first question.

the specs of te Msi Nvidia 260 are:
http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=pro ... =1488#menu

and the specs for the Msi Ati 4850 are:
http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=pro ... =1688#menu

both are running in default no overclocking. with 0ne must be better

Thanks

Single 4850 would be better than 260, but right now there is not easy way to support multiple ATI GPUs.

Can you give me a program name to try it?

is it faster than barswf?

For nvidia cards you can use EGB or Elite GPU Bruteforcer. It supports many types of hashes.

Is this true???

A 4870 X2 card with the right drivers, and the latest CAL 1.3 SDK will achieve about 2100 Mhash/sec with BarsWF, outperforming every Nvidia card.

Eleanor: well my quote is misleading... It would be true assuming BarsWF would be using CAL directly. But because it is using Brook+ and because as of today there are still limitations inherent to Brook+, it is not possible to reach the theoretical 2100 Mhash/sec. However it will be possible at some point in the future with a new Brook+ & a recompilation of BarsWF.

There is no such thing as "Elite GPU Bruteforcer", by EGB Irythros meant Extreme GPU Bruteforcer. There is also Elcomsoft Distributed Password Recovery, Elcomsoft MD5Crack, bvernoux's md5 cracking tool, majuric's md5 cracking tool.

The 4870 X2 is currently capable of 1070 Mhash/sec.

If you want to crack single hashes, use BarsWF. If you need to crack multiple hashes at the same time use Bitweasil's multiforcer.

Choose you card depending on its price, power consumption, performance, and how future-proof you want it to be (for example right now BarsWF can't exploit multiple ATI GPUs, but in the future this capability will make them significantly more attractive than Nvidia cards). Also consider what tools you want to run. BarsWF supports both Nvidia and ATI cards, but Bitweasil's multiforcer only supports Nvidia currently (though I may help him port his tool to ATI cards in the near future). For reference, the fastest cards for running BarsWF are as of today:
  • ATI HD 4870 X2: 1070 Mhash/sec (will be capable of 2140 Mhash/sec in the future with new Brook+/BarsWF)
  • ATI HD 4850 X2: 920 Mhash/sec (will be capable of 1840 Mhash/sec in the future with new Brook+/BarsWF)
  • Nvidia GTX 295: 1410 Mhash/sec
  • ATI HD 4890: 1350 Mhash/sec (will come out in April; this performance number assumes the rumor of 800 SPs @ 950MHz is true)
  • ATI HD 4870: 1070 Mhash/sec
  • ATI HD 4850: 920 Mhash/sec
  • Nvidia 9800 GX2: 880 Mhash/sec
  • Nvidia GTX 285: 810 Mhash/sec
  • Nvidia GTX 280: 710 Mhash/sec
  • ATI HD 4830: 680 Mhash/sec
  • Nvidia GTX 260 Core 216: 620 Mhash/sec
  • Nvidia GTX 260: 550 Mhash/sec
This list is based on various benchs reported on this forum, and can be trivially validated manually since the cracking speed increases linearly with the number of SPs and the shader frequency.

It depends on when AMD will decide to fix Brook+. Maybe in a couple months ?

That said, something may come sooner ( to those in the know). This may make you :joy: to have bought an ATI card. I don't want to say too much for now 8-)
